Desde 2005 que a UTAD tem vindo a desenvolver Workshops destinados a aprofundar temas que se consideram relevantes quer para o ensino quer para a prática da profissão da Arquitectura Paisagista.
No primeiro ano o Workshop 2005 abordou o tema do planeamento em espaço rural, por se considerar ser uma área de trabalho fundamental.Se associarmos a alteração das práticas agrícolas e florestais e tradicionais, à desertificação de algumas zonas do país, à invasão do “urbano” sobre áreas naturalizadas e à pressão do turismo, obtemos paisagens que progressivamente vão perdendo qualidade e consequentemente menos capacidade de gerar atractibilidade para a permanência das populações, para o desenvolvimento das actividades económicas e, em especial tratando-se de Portugal, para a ampliação do sector turístico de qualidade e diversidade. O planeamento em espaço rural foi considerado um tema prioritário, principalmente se se considerar que a UTAD se encontra implantada numa área rural/florestal que apresenta actualmente grandes dificuldades económicas e sociais mas, também, potencialidades quanto ao desenvolvimento rural e protecção ambiental, pelo que se tornou quase obrigatório que o Workshop tenha tido por tema: Paisagem – turismo – Água.
No ano de 2006 a opção foi a da abordagem de jardins temáticos, logo com exigências, usos e características específicas.
A UTAD tem instalado no interior do seu campus um Jardim Botânico que tem que coabitar com diversos tipos de pressões, nomeadamente a permanente ampliação de instalações e da rede viária e as necessidades dos docentes/estudantes e investigadores quanto a usos do espaço exterior. Sendo o espaço da Universidade aberto ao público, maiores e mais vastas terão que ser as valências a considerar, nomeadamente a sua inserção na estrutura ecológica de Vila Real e complementaridade das necessidades de recreio da população. Considerou-se ser este um tema interessante de reflexão de docentes e discentes sobre o que é um jardim Botânico e que tipo de espaços de exterior necessita a população universitária do século XXI. Teve-se por tema: O Campus da Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro – Plano Geral do Ordenamento.
Em 2007, considerou-se ser importante reflectir de forma mais geral sobre o recreio e o lazer em espaço exterior que se oferece às populações e quais as necessidades reais dessas populações actualmente e a médio prazo. Considera-se ser também importante reflectir sobre a sustentabilidade destes espaços no contexto social e económico em que se inserem.Vários e diversos têm sido os espaços de recreio exterior criados em Portugal nestas últimas décadas por Arquitectos Paisagistas e Arquitectos, na sua maioria promovidos pelas Autarquias, por vezes inseridos em programas de carácter nacional dos quais se destaca o Programa Polis.
Mas será que se está a fornecer um produto correcto face às necessidades de recreio das populações e características do país? Será que se está a conseguir associar o recreio à protecção dos recursos naturais e dos ecossistemas fundamentais? Será que estes espaços têm em consideração a capacidade técnico/financeira das Autarquias para os manter ao longo dos tempos? Ou será que se está apenas a oferecer uma grande quantidade de soluções iguais?... de réplicas de modelos que se pensam representar o paradigma do recreio e do prazer em espaço exterior? O que oferece o projectista em função do desejo do utente e da preservação e/ou requalificação do ambiente. Que parques urbanos (?), rurais (?), florestais (?), industriais (?) respondem às necessidades do ambiente e do homem?Pensamos que as questões levantadas exigem reflexões alargadas entre docentes e discentes pelo que se considerou ser um bom tema para o Workshop de 2007. Concretamente o workshop teve por designação: Parques de Lazer e Recreio – Novos Paradigmas.

Since 2005 the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) organizes Workshops to explore relevant themes both for the teaching and the practice of Landscape Architecture.
On the first year the Workshop 2005 approached the theme “planning the rural areas”, an essential work area.
If we associate the change of the traditional agriculture and forestry use, to the desertification of some areas of the country, the invasion of the urban over the naturalized areas and to the pressure of tourism, we obtain landscapes that progressively lose quality and have consequently less capability of generating attraction for the permanence of population, to the development of economic activities and, considering Portugal, to the enhancement of tourism in terms of quality and diversity. Planning the rural areas was considered as a priority theme, mainly if we consider that UTAD is located on a rural/forestry area with great social and economical difficulties but at the same time with potential in terms of rural development and environmental protection, due to it the theme for the first Workshop was: Landscape – Tourism – Water.
On 2006 it was decided to exercise on thematic gardens, consequently with specific uses and characteristics.
Inside the UTAD campus is located the Botanic Garden, cohabitating with several kinds of pressure, for instance the permanent expansion of buildings, the traffic network and the need of students, teachers and researchers in terms of outside space use. The Botanic Garden is an open area to the public; therefore the synergies to be considered are bigger and wider. For example, the insertion on Vila Real ecological structure and the relation to the population’s need of recreation. This was considered to be and interesting theme for reflection among teachers and students. What is a Botanic Garden and what kind of areas the university users of the XXI century need? The theme was: The Campus of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro – Landscape Planning.
On 2007, it was important to think on a wider approach, about the recreation on the open space that we are providing to the population, and what are their true needs, currently and in a longer term. Reflecting about the sustainability of these areas on the social and economical context that they belong to is also one of the aims. As over the last centuries Architects and Landscape Architects created several open space recreation areas, mainly supported by the municipalities and some times as a part of a wider national program, from which Polis program for urban environment development is highlighted, the questions raised were: if are we offering the correct solution according to the populations recreational needs and the characteristics of the country? Are we able to associate recreation to the protection of the natural resources and fundamental ecosystems? Do these spaces have under consideration the technical/financial capacity of the municipalities for long term maintenance? Aren’t we offering a large number of the same solutions? … Replicas of models that we consider representatives of the paradigm for recreation and amusement on the outside space? What the conceivers offer according to the users desires, preservation and/or requalification of the environment. Which Urban Parks (?), rural (?), forests (?), industrial (?), take in consideration the needs of the environment and population? We considered that the questions raised demand widen reflections among teachers and students, therefore we consider it as a good theme for the 2007 workshop: The recreation Park – New paradigms
